What is clip art?

The term clip art comes from a collection of pre-made, non-photographic images or pictures that can readily be pasted into a file or program. Users can clip, cut, or paste the graphic image into a file or book.

Clip art galleries usually contain collections of pictures which are arranged according to topic. For example, categories can include people, business, cartoons, animals, wedding, sports, holidays, and the like. Clip art galleries can have anywhere from 100 to 1000's of images.

Clip art started as reproductions of simple line art drawings. These drawings were pressed full size onto a board where text or additional images were used. The board would be referred to as a 'mechanical' and ready for photographing.

Clip art images usually come in two kinds - vector or raster graphics. Raster graphics are the images most commonly found on your computer screen, web, and digital camera. Raster graphics are made of grid of pixels, usually referred to as a bitmap.  Since vector graphics scale better and use less space than bitmap images they are commonly used for logos, flash animations, and EPS files.

Clip art today comes in many intriguing forms. 3d clip art can seem very realistic, and can be used in marketing new products. Animated clip art can really spruce up your website and make it really attractive. Animated gifs can include science experiments, fireworks, beautiful greeting cards, buttons, and animated cartoon characters.
